coaching philosophy

WARNING: lots of words - questionably worth the read

The perfect training program is nothing more than letters and numbers on a page unless we put it into practice. I spent nearly a decade earning a degree in Kinesiology and certifications like the functional movement screen (FMS), movnat, and finally becoming a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS).

What does all of that mean? I am qualified to assess someone's movement and then write an effective training plan for them in environments ranging from the gym to the jungle. Although helpful, most coaches would agree they've written a thousand perfect programs that were never practiced. Writing and implementing a training plan is easy. A little-known secret in the fitness industry is that even a poorly written program executed well (and consistently!) will get results. The greatest obstacle is identifying and addressing the roadblocks that prevent someone from showing up and becoming consistent. As the old saying goes, 80% of success is showing up. If that's true, why are we so focused on the 20%?

I discovered that habit and behavior change was integral to my client's (and my personal) success. Two questions drove my continued education. Why don't we do the things we know we should? And, Why do we continue to do the things we know we shouldn't? In my search for answers, I discovered the habit loop, environmental triggers, and fundamental human behaviors that drive us all. As a result, my coaching shifted from sets and reps to pre-mortem planning, environmental modification, and looking for bright spots. The paradigm shift of focusing on the 80% (just showing up) created radically improved client outcomes both inside the gym and in their personal lives. I continue to use this approach both with clients and in my life.

In addition to coaching, I am a registered nurse in the intensive care unit in southern Oregon. In my free time, I hit the gym, mountain bike, cook food, binge on the latest TV series, and spend time with my wife and two dogs.
